The AUXLWO Study Observer Training Program prepares US Coast Guard Auxiliary members and others to conduct boating observations as part of an ongoing research study conducted by JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. Auxiliarists have been conducting boating observations for this study since 2014. The purpose of the training is to show you how to apply your boating knowledge to our research procedures and protocols to get good, consistent data on life jacket wear rates across the country. Your participation is essential to the success of this important program!

A key is required to enroll in the training program.

Good luck! We hope you will enjoy the training program.

The FULL AUXLWO Observer Training Program is for new observers and observers with less than 2 years of AUXLWO study experience.  Experienced observers can also take this program.

The REFRESHER AUXLWO Observer Training Program is for observers with 2+ years of AUXLWO study experience.

Beginning in 2021, all boat forms contain an engine cut-off switch (ECOS) data point to be collected for power boats based on a recently passed Federal Boating Safety Law. The course describes what an ECOS is, how to observe ECOS data, and when to record the ECOS data point.
